How I Discovered the Keto Diet

I was on my way to work one morning, tuned in to my usual station, DZRH. The anchor was interviewing Senator JV Ejercito when something caught my attention.

The host asked how the senator managed to lose weight so fast. His answer was simple: the Keto diet.

It was only a short mention, but it piqued my curiosity. By the time I reached the office, I knew I had to research more about this “wonder diet.”

What is the Keto Diet?

The Keto diet (short for ketogenic diet) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that changes how your body uses energy. Instead of relying on carbs, your body enters a state called ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel.

It’s also known as:

  • Ketogenic diet

  • Low carb diet

  • Low carb high fat (LCHF) diet

Here’s what happens in a typical high-carb diet:

  • Glucose (from carbs) becomes your main energy source.

  • Insulin helps process that glucose and transport it through the body.

  • Since the body is using glucose for energy, fat is stored instead of burned.

On a Keto diet, carbs are drastically reduced. This forces your body to switch from burning glucose to burning fat, producing ketones in the liver as an alternative energy source.

Ketosis and Ketones Explained

  • Ketosis – a natural metabolic state where your body uses fat instead of carbs for energy.

  • Ketones – molecules produced by the liver from fat, used as your new energy source.

The beauty of Keto is that it’s not about starving calories, but about starving carbs. By adapting to this state, your body becomes more efficient in burning fat, boosting energy, and even improving mental clarity.

Starting My Keto Journey

Hearing Senator Ejercito’s testimony was the push I needed. The science behind Keto made sense to me—and I was excited to try it myself.

I couldn’t wait to share it with my wife, hoping she would also embrace this new lifestyle so we could start our Keto journey together.
